The Slasher Formula of "The Fall of the House of Usher" Doesn't Work
Переглядів 3,2 тис.7 місяців тому
Flanagan's latest "The Fall of the House of Usher" has a lot to offer, but I still felt like it was missing the magic that made shows like The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass so good, and ultimately the problem can be summed up with one word: structure. This video breaks down why the slasher formula doesn't quite work here, and what could have been done to make it work better. Check ou...
Convincing you to play ‘Outer Wilds’ without spoiling the magic

Outer Wilds is one of my all time favorite video games, but it's a game that's hard to talk about without giving away the magic of what makes it so special in the first place. Why Star Wars doesn't feel like Star Wars anymore

Disney's Star Wars franchise has received mix reception at best, and while there are plenty of videos nitpicking the writing or direction of its various movies and TV series, I feel like the root of the problem goes much deeper. Outer Wilds is one of those games that you keep playing, even when you aren't at your computer. You get so immersed that even in bed, you're still thinking of solutions to puzzle's you encountered. Even when the game is finished, you continuously try to find experiences similar to it, or compare aspects of it to your own life because you miss the sense of accomplishment, exploration and wonder that it gives you. 10/10 incredible game

    I watched the movie for the first time last night and went down a deep rabbit hole searching for answers. Out of all the analyses I read/watched, this was the best one, and the first video I'd recommend to people after watching the film.

    It's so good because it actually looks like a real film, particularly the second half of it with its natural lighting and lifelike colors making it his last film so far to actually be watchable in that regard, i.e. in the classic movie sense of grading and not the modern uniformed nonsense we've had to endure in filmmaking for the better part of two decades by now. Too bad though, that some of his older work like Jackie Brown now has been regraded to fit the current industry silliness.

    This was one of the best video essay about a video game I have seen. I’ve always had this problem where when I have a interest in a new game I want to play, I want to make sure that it is a game I will enjoy, but then I go and start watching videos about it that just give everything away! So when I play the game, it already feels like I have beaten it at least thrice before. I was thinking about playing Outer Wilds for a while and didn’t want to spoil everything for myself again, and this video was perfect! Thank you for making this great video! 👍👍

    Alexandra Essoe was spot on as Wendy Torrance. Henry Thomas probably had the best looks similar for the part, but I wish they made it deepfake as controversial as it is just for a much more mesmerizing experience like in Martin Scorseses The Irishman with voice over and deepfake as a tool. And Jack Nicholson and Shelly Duvall are still alive!

    • @danielolsen3781
      @danielolsen3781 9 днів тому

      Just an alterative version. Would Alex Essoe disagree and not want Shelly Duvall revisit here role as deepfake and voiceover? Scatman Crothers's family? Jack Nicholson must know it's he's most iconic role and do it for free

      Lots and lots of practice xD I've been making these for almost 10 years now, and in that time I watched a ton of movies and watched them closely, often frame by frame for certain scenes, and all of it helps get a better understanding of editing. There's no real science to it, it's all feeling and instinct, and that will develop differently for everyone

    I recently watched this film tonight. And the themes were fascinating. Especially the introspection, the will, and finding where you belong. It felt like a puzzle with numerous moving pieces. Memories tied to those said parts. Everything has a purpose. Even with the answers, something still felt empty

    I know it's not a typical reading of the film, but watching it, it seems to me that the film is actually quite ambivalent. Yes, it sees Brad and Janet as naive and stuffy. But it portrays Frank N' Furter and his crew as cool and wild, but also quite dangerous. Not the good guys per se. If this were a straight up, "these people are good and these people are bad" movie, it wouldn't tap so heavily into the collective imagination. It resonates because it's about the connection fun, joy and sexual liberation have to danger and self-destruction. And it doesn't underplay or soft peddle the danger bit, like people read it as doing today. It's a musical about jouissance, and that's partly why I love it. Thanks for the video!

    Hearing about the intense labor-of-love that went into making the costumes for tLotR trilogy (and even The Hobbit) really just helps highlight why the Rings of Power just lacks that specific "oomf" to it, that certain "Lord of the Rings" magic. It's in the details. The extras are wearing REAL chainmail made by hand. Viggo Mortenson made repairs himself when his Aragorn costume started to fall apart. The elves all wear gowns with hand-embroidered detailing. The Rohirans wear real leather stamped with barely-visible horse imagery. There was so much love put into those films. Whereas in the RoP, you can tell they use fabirc as a shorthand for the chainmail, with high-quality foam armor and props. The fabric has printed-on designs. It just looks like expensive cosplay. Because that's what Amazon made: a cheapened replica of the original.

    Excellent. I saw it in-theaters as a kid and enjoyed it as fun escapism, but over the years I've been surprised at how much it's stuck with me - not just a funny line or a cool action sequence, but its premise, scenarios, characters, gadgets, etc.. Its world: realized, its characters: fleshed-out, its humor: clever. Much hidden depth in MiB.
